ReadingFourth grade students strengthen their knowledge of reading and thinking strategies, including schema (using background knowledge and making connections), inferring, creating visual images, and synthesizing information. These strategies help students to readily describe key ideas and details, compare and contrast the point of view from which a story is narrated, and integrate knowledge and ideas by making connections between the text of a story and a visual representation.
Students will be required to read at least 30 minutes every night. |
WritingFourth grade writing becomes more sophisticated. Students focus on the creation of coherent paragraphs developed around a central idea and with a specific purpose and audience in mind. Furthermore, students mirror proficient writers by integrating every stage of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Fourth grade students learn to write multi-paragraph essays in three genres: narrative, informative/explanatory writing, and persuasive/opinion writing.
